Basic Martial Arts Weapons

When you acquire enough belts in whatever martial arts form you have decided to learn, you get the opportunity to start learning how to use the many different martial arts weapons that are now available to you.  It takes a lot of physical conditioning and skill to use these weapons, and it is important to understand not only how to use the weapons but also the history behind them.  Today most people will need them during a real fight, and they will use them in competition.

So what are some of the most common martial arts weapons you may encounter?  Let’s take a look.

Kama – also known as the sickle, the kama was originally used to cut grass.  It is a close range weapon that can be used to trap an attacker’s weapon as well as striking the opponent, blocking, and countering other weapons.

Bo Staff – the bo staff was originally used by priests, commoners, and samurai.  It measures six feet in length and came from the long poles people used to carry water and other items when draped across the shoulders.  When used in a fight, it works to block and strike against other weapons.

Sai – historians think the sai were developed from the pitchfork.  This three pronged weapon is used to block, stab, trap, and punch an attacker.  Proficient users can also accurately throw a sai.  Traditionally, sais were used in threes with one in each hand and the extra weapon tucked in the belt.

Katana – the traditional Japanese sword, the katana was the most widely used martial arts weapon during the time of the Samurai and today.  It is always worn on the left hand side and drawn from a ‘sky to ground’ manner.  It is a thrusting weapon that was used on the ground or on horseback.

Nunchaku – connected today with a short chain, the nunchaku was originally connected by horsehair and was a farm implement used for threshing.  The nunchaku can be used with a variety of stances and other techniques and these martial arts weapons are good for striking, choking, blocking, trapping, and spearing.
