Defending Against A Knife Strike
What would happen if you were attacked by someone wielding a knife? You could stand there and let them take everything they want, or you can fight back. If you have some basic knowledge of knife fighting techniques, you can easily defend yourself from someone attempting to do you harm. It is not hard to defend yourself if you know a few basic blocks to stop your attacker.
There are three basic knife fighting techniques that you can use to help defend yourself against a right hand overhead knife attack. Most people are right handed, which is why we are covering a right handed attack. If you are being attacked by someone who is left handed, simply reverse the directions.
Let’s take a look at these three knife fighting techniques.
Technique number 1: When your attacker is coming at you in a right hand overhead attack, the first thing you should do is step backwards with your left foot in order to get out of the range of the knife. Move your right arm in a counterclockwise manner in front of your body so that you can grab or push the arm holding the knife. Once you get a firm grip, drive the knife down towards the attacker’s leg. Follow this up with an elbow strike to the back of the attacker’s neck to disable them.
Technique number 2: Instead of stepping back away from the attacker, step forward towards your attacker’s left outside area of the hand that is holding the knife. Grab the attacking arm behind the knife as you swing your right arm in a clockwise motion. Once you have a firm grip of your attacker’s arm, swing their arm down and around and then back up and forward as you grab it with your left hand as well. Your attacker will be forced to bend over and you need to keep pushing the arm forward until they release the knife. Follow this up with an elbow strike to the back of the attacker’s neck to disable them.
Technique number 3: Step towards the attacker with your right foot inside of the attacking arm with your arms in a high X block. Make sure your left hand is in the front and grab your attacker’s hand with it. Follow the grip with the right hand and turn around so that your back is to their front. Their elbow will be on your shoulder and you can now apply pressure to the hand until they release the knife. You can then follow up with an elbow to the gut or sweep their feet out from under them.
