Knowing how to use a fighting knife is one thing, but being able to defend and disarm yourself is something else. You need to be able to do both in order to be well rounded in your self defense techniques. To successfully defend yourself from a knife attack you will need to make sure you put yourself in a defensive stance first. This stance allows you to defend against any form of attack, especially from a sharp object. Knives are not the only sharp object attackers can come after you with.
When you defend yourself against someone with a fighting knife, the first thing you need to do is throw up a strong block. The best block for this situation is the crossed arm block. It is a double arm block that moves in a scissoring motion and traps the knife and arm of your attacker between your hands. It allows you to bend over slightly and move your stomach and the sides of your body away from your attacker and protect them as best as you can. The beauty of this block is that it is not hard to do and you can put all of your strength behind it.
Once you have blocked your attacker’s fighting knife you need to disarm them. Going on the basis that your attacker is right handed, grab their right wrist with your right hand. If you do not get a strong grip the first time around, back away out of striking distance. If you do get a good grip, position your thumb at the back of the hand with your fingers on the inside of the wrist where the joint meets the hand. Lean back, straighten your arm, and then uncross your arms. Turn your arm so that the back of your hand is facing the floor and twist their arm so that their elbow is facing the sky. Apply pressure to the back of the hand with your thumbs and push down on the elbow to lock up your attacker’s arm and force them to drop the knife.
